the family

AM , his son and I had brunch in Evanston today. His wife was entertaining her sister that morning so he took his kid and the car and picked me up. Trying to enjoy eating with a child is not as easy as it seems. He wanted so much attention that I spent more of my time watching him than my food.

This did, however, provide an interesting perspective into motherhood. He was a messy eater so I sat next to him, wiped his mouth and clothes, fed him water and picked up everything he would drop on the floor. Women flocked to him and said without thought how cute he was. Naturally, people assumed he was my kid. They would either smile at me in passing or would look at him, then at me, then at AM and judge us as a family. It got me to thinking what a Mexican/Japanese kid would look like. He said, "If she was a girl, she'd be pretty, if he was a boy, it'd be a toss up...unless he took after your dad...and if it was our kid."
