2004-07-31 - 8:56 p.m. my lovers I treated JN to dinner before we went to the Art Institute as part of the Mentoring Program. After viewing the Seurat exhibit, I took him to see my favorite painting. Afterwards, right before we parted he said, "I'm really enjoying this mentoring program." I haven't seen this kid smile so much. AM's wife left Chicago on Thursday morning and he spent the night. Friday he cooked me calamari which we ate with peas, leftover Turkish food and red wine. I was pleased with the sight of him busying himself in my kitchen. Saturday we took a drive to Indiana for a brief road trip. It was today that I noticed him yawning, something he never does because his brain is constantly overstimulated. This is significant, a sign of neural relaxation. I watched him asleep in my bed, snoring slightly. His last cognative words were, "I feel like a castaway." I asked, "is this good or bad?" He replied, "Bad, because he's been away from civilization for years...." and he couldn't finish his words before he drifted away from me. I leave the country on September 13.
